Question
What happens if I don’t sign up for Medicare when I’m first eligible?
Answer
Missing your Medicare enrollment period can create problems, including delayed coverage and possible late-enrollment penalties.
If you don’t enroll in Medicare Part B when you’re first eligible and don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, you may need to wait for the General Enrollment Period from January 1 through March 31. Coverage generally begins the month after you enroll.
Depending on your circumstances, you could also face a Part B late-enrollment penalty that may continue for as long as you have Part B.
There are exceptions. For example, people who delayed Medicare because they had qualifying employer coverage may be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period without a penalty.
That’s why it’s better to check your eligibility before assuming you’ve missed your opportunity.
